The somewhat controversial topic of the usefulness of gamification in business has been sparking debates recently.

One claim is that it’s a great business tool that helps engage and retain clients, as well as lead them in the right direction. The opposite view holds that there are few real successes in gamification.

Today we’re going to the consider the case for gamification in interactive design, and illustrate it with some great examples.

The principles of Burrhus Frederic Skinner and his Operant Conditioning Chamber lay the basis for studies on how to influence a certain human behavior in order to design a certain habit.

Next follows the How or Mastery — game mechanics can’t be based purely on a random luck, skills, knowledge or some rules needed to be involved in gamification as well. For a successful gamified experience, users need to feel a sense of achievement and improvement. That they are leveling up their skills. It should trigger a feeling of achieving something or mastering a skill. And as a user levels up, the difficulty of a task should go up as well.

And finally Triggers, cues to action. Effective triggers are essential for gamification. Very often between motivation and mastery, one very important element is missing, that will help your users overcome fears, doubt or distraction and finally complete the action. These are triggers.

According to behavior scientist, BJ Fogg, there are three types of triggers: facilitator (for users that have high motivation but the lack of ability), signal (is a reminder, users already have the motivation and ability to perform an action), and spark (for users that have high ability but low motivation).

And in order to achieve a desired action, gamification uses the following mechanics that serve as rewards: goals; badges; leveling up; fast feedback; leaderboards; competition; collaboration; points.

How to Make Gamification Work

Gamification rises quite high expectations. It’s believed to be a great tool to motivate users to change their behavior, develop skills and habits and solve problems. Businesses apply it to increase customer engagement, improve employee performance, to help with training, education and onboarding, personal development, innovation management, and the list goes on.

Businesses that used gamification drive more website traffic and lower time for conversions and onboarding. Even potential employees are gamification proponents. According to a study, 55% of Americans are interested in working for a company that uses gamification as a tool to increase productivity.

Can gamification really be the answer business has been looking for? Well, you never know until you try. But the important thing is to set the right expectations and use business gamification the right way:

It’s All About Correctly Designed Experiences

Gamification offers wonders to business. It is deemed to able to solve many of its pressing issues: engage and retain customers, help with employee training and onboarding, attract more visitors to your website and convert them into your customers with a higher success rate. It’s important to remember that gamification isn’t a solution to every business problem, but if designed correctly, it can assist in achieving certain goals. The most important thing to remember is that it should be aligned not only with the business problems but customer problems, their goals and wishes as well.

If you are reading this, that means you are probably looking for that magic trick or golden secret to finding an escape from that wall that is blocking out all your inspirational ideas. Before that, it will help you to understand what being a writer is all about. For this, you need to let me indulge on a short backstory.

I had made friends with a guy at a writing seminar, and for a few days a week, with my crumpled leather notebook in tow, I hung out and talked with him over coffee at Cuppachino’s coffee shop near the Boston College campus. A nice guy, he shared about the books he had written and was writing at the moment. This went on until one day when he decided to introduce himself (and I) as writers to another patron at the same coffee shop.

The man immediately called my friend out. “I am a writer,” he said, and then pointing at me, he added, “He is obviously a writer, but you, my friend, are no writer and it is annoying that you would pass yourself off as one.” As my friend began stammering and stuttering as if mortally wounded, the man apologized sincerely and left. Needless to say, we stopped meeting after that incident.

Cause For Confrontation

To be fair, there was more to the conversation, and well, the man simply called it as he saw it. In retrospect, I couldn’t put my finger on what had bothered me about this ‘Writing’ friend until this incident. He was no writer (however, he was a pretty darn good liar). And this other fellow had caught every observable trait.

“First of all, you do not have the language skills for it, ” he had said. “I have seen you in here at least 10 times and not once have you carried a notebook or even written anything on a napkin. I have never once seen you yawn, much less look tired while we both have terrible bags under our eyes.”

“You also talk too much and I am sorry to say that you just do not have the kind of passion that it takes to be a writer and believe me, if you did… it would show.”

The Content and Inspiration Paradox

Now a content writer is often asked to write the same material over and over, either on purpose or incidentally from client to client. This is where, many writers would attest, the writing passion is really tested.

Essentially there are only two differences between us and a sculptor or a dancer or pianist. First, we create art with words (it’s harder than it looks), and secondly, we rarely have fans to cheer us on. As artists and content writers, we have to find ways to inspire ourselves (occasionally the editor or a random reader will drop in a nice note), and we keep pushing ourselves, until one day, we just can’t.

If you write for a living, one day, you may feel compelled to throw up our hands in exasperation and proclaim to the world, “I just can’t do it anymore”. That’s when you have to remind yourself one very important thing.

Writers Help People

Regardless of the topic, as content writers and bloggers, our words eventually reach out and help someone. Our reviews help others make good decisions about purchasing a product, a service, a trip to a foreign land etc. We show people how to write blogs and articles, what typography to use, how to build and optimize websites and sometimes inspire them to create something new.

When I finally realized that my words were getting through to people, helping them, even if only inspiring them, it made all the difference in the world.

Just knowing that someone’s life will be a little easier or that I made someone smile ignites my original writing passion again. In the end, it is why we are here, alive, and part of society. We write and that’s how we contribute to our fellow man (and woman).

So When You Run Out Of Ideas…

When I begin to falter in faith or inspiration, there are three things I would do to regain my composure. They may work for you, or they may not; it takes a bit of trial and error to find out.

It’s Not About You

When I falter, I stop. I no longer allow myself to worry about poor me because in the end… it is not about me. I shift the focus of my writing towards those for whom I am writing, the reader. I make it about others, and about what I can do to help them. Believe me, our inspiration returns when it is no longer about us.

Write From The Heart

Rather than worry about why you are running out of ideas, begin writing from the heart because that is what you should be doing anyway (rather than worrying about yourself). Create something honest, and original and you might end up with something new, and if you are lucky, something beautiful.

Everyone has the knowledge to share. When I feel less than inspired, I remind myself to act like a teacher, one who passes knowledge from one mind to another. Like the old adage: Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. It is hard not to be inspired with that kind of responsibility and the joy of knowing that someone will benefit from what we write, possibly for a lifetime.

To develop WordPress locally in our computer, we need a local server with Apache and MySQL installed in our computer. The easiest way to get these is by installing a packaged application, such as WAMP for Windows, and MAMP for OSX.

However, installing WordPress within it is less straightforward. First, we need to put the WordPress files in its corresponding folder, which is usually named htdocs, create a database for it, input the required information to connect WordPress to the database, and set a user account before we can finally get the site to run.

Combine it with the setup of a virtualhost, and the number of WordPress sites that you have to handle, and the process will certainly be even more convoluted. If you found yourself in this situation, you might want to try an application called ServerPress.

Using ServerPress

ServerPress is a local server application that is built specifically for developing WordPress, as well as bbPress and BuddyPress. It comes with the feature that allows us to install WordPress quicker than originally possible. It is available for Windows and OSX; Grab the installer here, and follow the instruction as per your OS.

Once the Web and Database services (Apache, MySQL) are running, we are ready to install WordPress.

Before proceeding, please note that if you are using Pow, you may need to deactivate or uninstall it to avoid a conflict, because both Pow and ServerPress use a .dev domain name.

To create a new WordPress project, select Create a new development website.

Name your website domain, and select the WordPress version you would like to install. In the Site Root section, you can see where the site will be installed.

Click Next button. ServerPress will automatically set the required stuff (tables, servername, virtualhost, etc) automatically. Follow the next step to create an Admin user for your site.

Moving and Changing Domain Name

With ServerPress, it is also possible to change or copy your current sites with another domain name, which only takes a few clicks.

Select Remove, copy, or move an existing website.

Select your site, and chose whether you want to Copy, Move, or Remove it. In this case, as you can see from the screenshot below, I would like to move my website; putting it under a new domain name.

Set your new site domain name. Then, in the Site Root section, you can also specify the folder location for the website. Click the Next button. It will take care of everything. And we are done.

Final Thought

If you do not want a messy and complicated way to setup WordPress and virtualhost, ServerPress could be a good alternative. With it, you can have it up and running in only a few clicks. Give it a try.

Windows 10 is popular for several reasons including the criticism on some of its features that violate or threaten your privacy. Cortana, though highly useful at times, seeks too much personal information about you like any other personal digital assistant in the market.

That’s not all, Windows 10 has various built-in sharing, feedback and telemetry features that share the user’s information with other parties — say your friends or Microsoft itself. Most people, however, are sensitive about their privacy and like to control their personal data.

That’s why, in this article, we’re sharing various tips and tricks to help you disable data spies, claim back your privacy and control your data yourself in Windows 10.

Turn off advertisements

Windows 10, like Android and iOS, shows advertisements in apps as well as on the web pages. Cookie spies follow you everywhere on the web and Microsoft displays personalized advertisements using your data collected from many such spies. There’s an option, luckily, to disable these ads and keep your data private.

Here’s how:

  1. Click the Start button. Go to Settings > Privacy > General > Change privacy options.
  2. Toggle off “Let apps use my advertising ID for experience across apps“.

Opt out of personalized ads

Microsoft assigns a unique, anonymous and user-resettable advertising ID to all its users.   1. Open this link in each browser: http://choice.microsoft.com/en-us/opt-out.

Cortana offers various useful services but collects lots of your data to provide you excellent suggestions and search results. If you limit yourself from using such cloud services and don’t want your personal data to reach the cloud (even anonymously), then follow these steps:

  2. Toggle off all the options shown in Settings including but not limited to “Hey Cortana“, “My device history“, and “My search history“.

Microsoft stores all the information gathered about you by its apps. Contrary to one’s belief, turning off Cortana doesn’t delete the old information stored in the cloud. There’s an option, however, to remove the saved data, which you can do by going through these steps:

  1. Open Cortana. Go to Settings >”Change what Cortana knows about me in the cloud“.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the new window and click the Clear button.
  3. Click the following links to clear search history, favorites and more: “Bing Maps“, “Search History page” and “the notebook connected services page“.

  5. In the Cortana’s window, click on the Notebook icon and go to Permissions.

Disable Wi-Fi Sense

Microsoft initially designed the Wi-Fi Sense feature for sharing of network passwords with peers and friends, but now the password sharing feature is disabled. Its current function is to suggest and connect to open Wi-Fi hotspots within your range using the crowdsourced information. If you need to disable the same for stronger security, just follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
  2. Under Wi-Fi Sense, toggle off the option “Connect to suggested open hotspots“.

Disable OneDrive Sync

Microsoft’s OneDrive is a cloud storage service that comes pre-loaded in Windows 10. This eases storing and sharing files from any device, but it backs up all your user data if it’s enabled. That’s why it’s better to turn it off if you’re not a fan of OneDrive and don’t use it as your primary cloud storage.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. In the system tray, click the up-facing arrow present on the right side.
  2. Right-click the OneDrive app icon. Select Settings option.
  3. Uncheck the two options: “Start OneDrive automatically when I sign in to Windows” and “Let me use OneDrive to fetch any of my files on this PC“.
  4. Click OK to save the settings.

Manage Privacy Options

A few other privacy-invading features send data to Microsoft when you visit URLs, type using the on-screen keyboard, use apps, etc. If turned off, these less critical features will have small effect on the user experience hence, it’s better to turn off such options to improve your privacy in Windows 10. Follow these steps to turn off these options:

  1. Click the Start button. Go to Settings > Privacy > General.
  2. Under Change privacy options, toggle off two options: “Send Microsoft info about how I write to help us improve typing and writing in the future” and “Let websites provide locally relevant content by accessing my language list“.
  3. Change Privacy Options
  4. Toggle off all listed features like Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Calendar, etc.

Configure Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge has data-gathering features like scanning typed URLs, logging keystrokes for typing prediction, integrating Cortana for personalized results and more. These features speed up your browsing and enhance the overall experience. It’s suggested to turn off such features if Edge is not your primary browser or you don’t use or require such features in Edge. Below are the steps to disable such features:

  1. Open Edge. Click on menu icon (three dots) on the top right.
  2. Choose Settings > View Advanced Settings.

  4. In the new window, toggle off “Use Adobe Flash Player“.
  5. Under Privacy and services, toggle off the following:
  • Offer to save passwords
  • Save form entries
  • Have Cortana assist me in Microsoft Edge
  • Show search suggestions as I type
  • Use page prediction to speed up browsing, improve reading, and make my overall experience better
  • Help protect me from malicious sites and downloads with SmartScreen filter

Disable SmartScreen Filters

Microsoft receives all information about the URLs you visit or apps you install — thanks to its SmartScreen filters active in Windows 10. Such filters block malicious sites and downloads by analyzing them, but in the process, your data also reaches the company’s servers. Though it is important to protect against threats, yet if still want to disable these filters, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Start button. Go to Control Panel.
  2. On the top-right corner, set View by to Category. Navigate to System and Security > Security and Maintenance.
  3. Select “Change Windows SmartScreen settings” from the left panel.
  4. Select the radio button “Don’t do anything (turn off Windows SmartScreen)“.
  5. Change Windows SmartScreen settings
  6. Now, go to Settings > Privacy > General.
  7. Under “Change privacy options“, toggle off “Turn on SmartScreen Filter to check web content (URLs) that Windows Store apps use“.

Disable Windows 10 Sync

Windows 10 synchronizes preferences and settings across all of your devices. This means settings like passwords, language preferences, desktop and web browser settings are available on every device you sign in using the same Microsoft account. If you’re, however, not a fan of the cloud and don’t want your data to be synced, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings.
  2. Toggle off “Sync settings” or toggle off individually under ‘Individual sync settings“.

Switch to a Local Account

In Windows 10, Microsoft account lets you sync settings, sign in automatically to the apps, sync your data and do much more. However, this also means that your data is synced online, apps can see your info and more such privacy issues. That’s why, if you don’t use the online account’s features, then it’s better to turn it off.

Here’s how to switch to a local account in Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
  2. Select “Sign in with a local account instead” and follow the on-screen wizard.

Turn off Location permission

Location permission helps apps and services deliver location-relevant information and other services like weather forecasts, local news and more. Though found okay by many people, some of us don’t want to share the location with apps or websites. If you too are conscious about your location, then simply turn off the location access using these steps:

  2. Click the Change button, toggle off “Location service“.

Configure Windows Update

Windows allows peer-to-peer sharing for Windows Update. That means the peers on your local network or the Internet can download the updates from your computer. Fortunately, there’s an option to turn off update sharing and here are the steps:

  1. Click Start button. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Windows Update Settings
  3. In the right panel, under Update settings, click Advanced Options.
  4. Choose how updates are installed
  5. In the new window, click “Choose How Updates Are Delivered“.
  6. Select the radio button next to the option “PCs on my local network” and toggle off the button above the radio button named Off.

Disable Feedback & Diagnostics

Windows sends diagnostic data to Microsoft’s servers for troubleshooting performance issues and improve its services. The data sent includes information about apps, memory snapshots, etc.

Though irrelevant, many people prefer not to share anything from their PC to any company’s server. If you too dislike sending feedbacks, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button. Go to Settings > Privacy > Feedback & diagnostics.
  2. Change “Feedback frequency” to Never.
  3. Change “Diagnostic and usage data” to Basic.

Try out Spybot’s Anti-Beacon

Spybot’s Anti-Beacon blocks and stops various data tracking (telemetry) features of Windows 10. This utility curtails the operating system from sending anonymous information about your system to Microsoft and hence, saves us from tracking.

Though the company claims to collect this data for keeping your devices secure and improving the user experience and services, yet many of us aren’t comfortable in sharing data for any reason, even if done anonymously. That’s why you can activate Spybot’s Anti-Beacon and be safe using the given steps:

  1. Download it from https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/.
  2. Install the program and open Spybot’s Anti-Beacon.
  3. Click the Immunize button on the opening screen.

Some finishing points

Though the above features are annoyingly snoopy, turning them off restricts their use and hence, you may notice some apps or other things requiring one or more of these enabled. In such situations, if you really require that feature or tool, enable the settings but if you are wary of the features offered by Windows 10 or want ultimate privacy, just keep them off.

There are times when customers want as much content as possible, as many design elements and drop-downs as possible. They saw some cool sites and they wanted a little of everything.

That’s quite understandable, but we’re trying to explain that a site with a lot of content and complicated design is not necessarily easy to use, sometimes even having the opposite effect for users.

That’s why we’ve created a mini guide of 4 Ways To Simplify Your Website Design To Attract Customers:

1) Shorten the content of the website:

Web visitors rarely read line by line, usually, they only scan the web pages and their focus is only on a few words and images. However, there are many web pages that have content that is not needed to send the message. You can clean up a lot of the content of a website by limiting the number of words on the screen. Try refraining text to remove parasite words.

How can you do that? You can practice by expressing a single idea in a single paragraph – it’s a good way to write and helps readers “scan” the text with the look. Another way to write is the “pyramid” format, that is, start from the conclusion and add content along the way. A site that I really like for the simplicity offered is Apple.com.

2) Delete the visual decorations:

When it comes to visuals, it often happens that we want to add extra elements because it ‘looks good’. Everyone desires a design that looks good and unique. But although intentions are good, the end result may be disastrous. Try to have as little decoration as possible or other items that won’t distract the reader from what is important.

Below I attached a screenshot on the Vconcept.com page. It can be noticed that they do not have a lot of text, but the text is very difficult to understand and they have a problem with the fonts. They use plain text, underlined text, some words have a different color, and the first word that represents the company’s logo is a different font. We can also talk about all triangles flying in the background, a decoration that does not bring any benefit to the site.

3) Reuse design elements:

Try to create repetitive elements and consolidate them. If you use a lot of colors, fonts and style variations, the result will be overwhelming, but in a ba way. I recommend that you re-use the design elements to maintain a consistent design on the page. There are also some basic rules such as: Do not use more than two types of font per page. The same rule applies to colors and design elements. If you have a quote at the end of each page, make sure it looks the same on all pages.

An example would be thebusinessdepot.co.uk. They seem to use a simple theme, but too many colors are used. Also for each page, there is a different color that has no meaning.

4) Have one user as target:

I know it sounds a little crazy for me to tell you this, but it works. I’ve encountered too many companies that are trying to address a wide range of clients, different ages, different backgrounds, different sexes, and so on.
